Chapter ten

Aaron

I could taste iron and feel my heartbeat in my throat. The pumping of blood flooded my ears. The heat in my face threatened to boil my brain.

I dragged a shallow breath of air into my exhausted lungs, throat choked and will to breathe at a minimum. It was no more than a reflex. Like kissing him back. It was out of your control. When someone as kind and attractive as Garret smiled at you, you smiled back. When he kissed you, you opened your mouth. That was the way bodies were built.

Easy for you to reject responsibility, I whispered to myself and forced my feet to move along. I found myself passing by Garret without looking anywhere in particular. My cock ached from the erection and my heart pounded so hard that my head was going to explode.

Megan was sitting at the dining table, texting, unaware of the knife with my fingerprints sticking out from her back. After the entire day I’d spent with her, listening and complaining to her, receiving her help in all the ways she knew how to give, I went ahead and shoved my tongue down her boyfriend’s throat.

What sick irony…

I passed through the living room, down the hallway, and into the guest bathroom. My cock throbbed eagerly, as if expecting me to stroke it to release, but I locked the door and let the water run in the sink before exhaling all the air that I hadn’t realized I’d been holding. I stared at the mirror; my flushed face and glassy gaze painted guilt all over me. Anger stiffened the corners of my mouth while tears welled in my eyes.

He was hers. He was going to stay hers. And if he wanted to fuck around behind her back, he wasn’t going to do it with me. Not after she fucking adopted me. Not after Bruce and Nick and the whole goddamn ordeal that had upturned my life.

I splashed water over my face and wasted time for a while longer. When my heart rate calmed and air flowed in and out of me with reasonable ease, I knew I was out of excuses. Time to face them. Time to act cool. I turned the tap off and marched back to where Garret was setting down the plates of stir-fried noodles with any and all vegetables he’d found in the fridge. Peppers, mushrooms of three sorts, onions, diced carrots, and the list went on and on. The man was a magician in the kitchen, and not only when he probed your mouth with his tongue.

Dammit, I cursed at myself. That was not something I should think of. That had never happened.

Megan scoffed at her phone. “Can you believe this? I’m on baby duty.” Her groan made the table shake on its legs. “Kate’s booked a last minute cruise.”

You two are gonna be alone even more, the devil sitting on my shoulder whispered. I grabbed a pinch of diced peanuts that Garret had served on the side, and sprinkled it over my noodles.
